The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) is set to enchant audiences once again with its upcoming gala performance, “Rise.” Scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Miramar Cultural Center, this two-hour showcase promises a mesmerizing blend of artistry and cultural celebration.

What is “Rise”?

Rise” is a landmark presentation that highlights the NDTC’s unique fusion of modern dance, classical technique, and traditional Afro-Caribbean folk forms. This performance is designed to celebrate themes of identity, resilience, and the rhythms that unite us as a community.

The event will feature eight major works from the NDTC repertoire, each showcasing the company’s artistic excellence and cultural relevance. These include:

1.  Ritual of the Sunrise (1998) - A dance that expresses renewal and cultural identity.

2.  Traddin’ (2013) - A vibrant arrangement of traditional folk songs accompanied by live musicians.

3.  Home (2025) - A contemporary piece that delves into themes of belonging and migration.

4.  Drumming Interlude - An Afro-Caribbean percussion performance emphasizing ancestral rhythms.

5.  Ascending (2025) - A new choreography symbolizing growth and collective uplift.

6.  Bloom (2025) - A contemporary work exploring the connection between earth and heaven.

7.  Don’t Leave Me (2013) - An emotional piece blending theater and dance.

8.  Kumina (1971) - A cornerstone of the NDTC repertoire, rooted in Afro-Jamaican rituals for mourning and thanksgiving, featuring traditional stick play known as “Warrick.”

The choreography transitions from the serene rituals of dawn to the vibrant energy of cultural celebration, skillfully blending folk traditions, classical forms, live folklore singing, contemporary dance, and ancestral drumming.
