Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a foot injury. Shaw, who has been in exceptional form, is currently the top scorer in the Women's Super League with an impressive 21 goals in just 18 games. However, her campaign was cut short after sustaining the injury during City's 5-0 victory over West Ham last Sunday April 21, 2024

City manager Gareth Taylor expressed his sympathy for Shaw, stating, "It is difficult for Bunny [Shaw's nickname], as she has had an incredible season." Shaw's absence is a significant blow to City's aspirations of winning their first WSL title since 2016. She is currently eight goals ahead of second-placed Lauren James in the race for the WSL golden boot and holds the record for the most goals scored by a Manchester City player.

Despite the setback, Taylor remains confident in the abilities of City's other attacking players to step up in Shaw's absence. He mentioned players such as Mary Fowler, Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, and Jess Park, who are all capable of filling the void left by Shaw. While acknowledging Shaw's unique qualities as a box player, Taylor believes the team will adapt to a different style of play in her absence.

Manchester City, currently leading the WSL standings, have a chance to extend their lead over reigning champions Chelsea by six points if they defeat bottom club Bristol City this Sunday. However, it is worth noting that City will have played two more games than Chelsea at that point.

Shaw is unfortunately not the only important player at Manchester City to suffer a serious injury this season. Key midfielder Jill Roord and back-up goalkeeper Sandy MacIver are both out with anterior cruciate knee ligament injuries. Additionally, England international keeper Ellie Roebuck is sidelined after suffering a stroke earlier in the season. Manager Gareth Taylor attributed these injuries to the intense schedule and demands faced by elite women's footballers, both at the club and international level.

While City remains confident in their squad, they are eager to have all players available for selection. The team understands the challenges and risks associated with the demanding nature of the game, but they remain focused on achieving their goals.
