Jamaica's Tourism Youth Expo and Career Fair In St. Elizabeth Shines Light on Exciting Opportunities

Jamaica’s tourism industry offers a plethora of diverse and rewarding career paths that go beyond traditional hospitality roles. For students and young professionals aspiring to build a dynamic future in this sector, the recent Tourism Youth Expo and Career Fair, organized by the Tourism Product Development Company Ltd. (TPDCo), proved to be an invaluable platform for gaining insights and inspiration.

I had the privilege of attending this engaging event at BREDs Sports Park & Academy in Treasure Beach, where despite the breezy conditions, the student attendees remained focused and fully aware of the potential the expo held for their future ambitions. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and opportunity, thanks to the participation of esteemed sponsors such as the Tourism Enhancement Fund, Jakes, Jamaica Tourist Board, Bluefields Organic Farm, Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation, and Sandals South Coast.

Schools from across the southern and western parishes came out in force, showcasing the enthusiasm of numerous bright young minds from Lacovia High School, Newel High School, Bethlehem College High School, BB Coke High School, Nain High School, New Day High School, Maggotty High School, and May Day High School. These students eagerly sought to learn about the various career prospects within the tourism industry. The exceptional MC work of Marline Stephenson Dalley from TPDCo kept the audience captivated throughout the day. Dalley highlighted, "We have been staging this Youth Expo for a couple of years in various locations across the island. We want all students to be exposed to the wonderful opportunities that exist in the tourism sector."

The event featured influential speakers, including TPDCo Executive Director, Wade Mars, who delivered passionate keynotes that encouraged students to pursue the dynamic opportunities within the tourism industry.

Moreover, the students had the chance to immerse themselves in hands-on cultural sessions. Phillip Supersad showcased drumming and pottery making demonstrations, presenting the creative side of tourism experiences. However, one of the most memorable moments was Myrna Ellis-Medina's presentation on the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU). Her insights, coupled with a surprise appearance by a successful CMU graduate from St. Elizabeth, left a lasting impression on the students.

When it was time for lunch, Jakes went above and beyond by providing delicious meals for everyone. Students and teachers enjoyed a much-needed break, savoring their food amidst the company of friends on the beautiful grounds of BREDs Sports Park. It was heartwarming to witness the students' politeness and respectfulness.

Despite a slight post-lunch fatigue, energy levels soared again during an impromptu dance competition led by the Sandals entertainment team! The students eagerly showcased their dance moves, recharging their excitement for the afternoon sessions.

The Tourism Youth Expo and Career Fair was undeniably a resounding success. As Raoul Chambers, the guidance counselor at BB Coke, observed, "This was an excellent event for the students because they had the opportunity to interact with numerous individuals in the tourism field. I am confident that they are leaving with a renewed mindset."
